Coments on the condition:
Très bel exemplaire, sur un flan un peu court mais une frappe centrée. Agréable patine grise de collection

Obverse


Obverse legend : XAZO.
Obverse description : Tête barbare, très stylisée à droite, les cheveux hirsutes ; le visage formé avec une croisette à midi et le reste de la légende devant le visage.

Reverse


Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Carré perlé, avec un annelet pointé au centre, accosté de quatre petits traits bouletés dans les angles.

Commentary


Si ce revers est assez classique, le style de la tête du droit est plus inhabituel. La tête est assez massive et peu détaillée, mais néanmoins avec le nez et l'œil marqués.
La croisette initiale et le reste de la légende AZO sont partiellement lisibles sur cet exemplaire !.

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
