Obverse description : Carré perlé, un annelet pointé au centre et un petit V dans chaque coin ; une croisette au sommet.

Reverse


Reverse legend : LÉGENDES GÉOMÉTRIQUES.
Reverse description : Croix grecque bouletée, cantonnée de deux globules ; légende autour.

Commentary


Avec cet annelet pointé au droit et ce type de légende au revers, ce sceat correspond presque exactement au n° 183 d’Oxford. Au droit, l’un des V est remplacé par un segment accosté d’un globule.
Trois des quatre exemplaires d’Oxford proviennent du trésor de Aston Rowant.

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
