Coments on the condition:
Très bel exemplaire complet et bien frappé des deux côtés. Patine grise sur un exemplaire de frappe vigoureuse

Obverse description : Carré perlé, un annelet pointé au centre entouré de segments aux extrémités pointées.

Reverse


Reverse legend : LÉGENDES GÉOMÉTRIQUES.
Reverse description : Croix grecque bouletée, cantonnée de globules ; grènetis grossier autour.

Commentary


Avec cet annelet pointé au droit, ce sceat correspond aux n° 183 et 186 d’Oxford, mais le carré perlé est à peine suggéré et le traitement très fruste, comme s’il s’agissait d’une imitation.
Trois des quatre exemplaires d’Oxford proviennent du trésor de Aston Rowant.

ENGLAND - ANGLO-SAXONS

(7th - 8th centuries)

If the minting of these coins is to be located at the beginning of the 8th century, in Great Britain, it is not exceptional to find them in Gaul. They are often confused with Merovingian silver coins (cf. MONNAIES XIX, n° 503, sceattas c. 680-710, classified in Merovingian denier of Laon). During the 8th century, the style of these pieces is more and more degenerated, they are often in ridge or filled. These coins disappeared from circulation in the second half of the 8th century.
