Historical background

EMPIRE OF TREBIZOND - MANUEL I KOMNENOS

(1238-1263)

The Greek empire of Trebizond was founded by Alexios I Komnenus (1204-1222), the grandson of Andronicus I (1183-1185). Manuel I Comnenus succeeded Andronicus I Gidon (1222-1235) and John I Axuchos (1235-1238). During his long reign, Manuel had to face the triple threat of Muslims, Seljuks and Mongols who tried to take over the region. Andronicus II (1263-1266) succeeded him.
