Historical background

EMPIRE Trebizond - MANUAL I COMNÈNE

(1238-1263)

The Greek Empire of Trebizond was founded by Alexius I Comnenus (1204-1222), the grand-son of Andronicus I (1183-1185). Manuel I Comnenus Andronicus I Gidon succeeded (1222-1235) and John I. Axuchos (1235-1238). During his long reign, Manuel had to face the triple threat of Muslims, Seljuks and Mongols who tried to take over the region. Andronicus II (1263-1266) succeeded him.
