Historical background

EMPIRE NICEA - JEAN III DUCAS

(1222-3/11/1254)

John III Ducas Vatatzes or John I of Nicaea is the step-son of Theodore Lascaris, the founder of the dynasty. He continued the work of his predecessor and was one of the greatest rulers of the Byzantine history. He managed to contain its competitors: the Emperor of Thessaloniki, Tsar of the Bulgarians (Asen II) and the Latin empire whose life already was more than disunity among his enemies. Saved in extremis by the Mongolian flood Nicaea took advantage of the weakness of its neighbors. Despite wars, John III raised the country's economy and Nicaea knew well-being as the Byzantine Empire had not been long.
