Obverse translation : “Imperator Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus”, (L’empereur Marc Aurèle Antonin auguste).

Reverse legend : COL IV-L A-VG FEL// BER.
Reverse description : Tyché ? ou Poséidon ? debout de face, le pied gauche posé sur une proue, tenant un sceptre ou un trident de la main droite et relevant son vêtement ; à droite, une statue de Nikè posée sur une colonne la couronnant ; le tout dans un temple tétrastyle orné d’un fronton triangulaire orné d’un disque et d’acrotères ; escalier à quatre marches ; de chaque côté, un Génie ; au pied du temple, petits personnages chevauchant un dauphin de chaque côté.
Reverse translation : “Colonia Iulia Augusta Felicia Berytus”, (Colonie Julia Augusta heureuse de Beyrouth).

ELAGABALUS

Proclaimed emperor on May 16, 218, Elagabalus, sole august until the end of June or the beginning of July, left Syria to join Rome. Elagabalus stops at Nicomedia. He spent the whole winter there and fell ill. It was therefore in this city that he took up his second consulship. Elagabal will not arrive in Rome until July or September 219, bringing the black stone of his cult to install him in his capital. He will never return to Syria, quickly assassinated after an unequaled reign of turpitude and disorder.
