Historical background
ELAGABALUS and JULIA MAESA
(218-222)
Elagabalus is the son of Julia Soemias and Sextus Varius Marcellus. He is above all the grandson of Julia Maésa who favored his accession to the throne. Julia Maesa was the sister of Julia Domna and the wife of Julius Avitus. She is therefore the sister-in-law of Septimius Severus. During the reign of Elagabalus, it is she who holds the reality of power. She will not hesitate to sacrifice her daughter and her grandson in order to retain power within her daughter by raising her last grandson Alexandre Sévère, first to the caesarat, then to the august..
