Historical background

EGYPT - REPUBLIC OF EGYPT

(since 1952)

The monarchical Constitution was abolished in December 1952. In 1953, the military regime abolished the political parties and proclaimed the Republic. After General Neguib, Nasser took power in 1954 and took the title of president, he hunted down communists and Islamists. A champion of non-alignment, Nasser took Egypt on the road to development with agrarian reform, irrigation and the electrification of the country. The Suez affair made him a hero of the Arab world against the former colonizing powers, but Soviet aid remained welcome for years. In 1970, Anouar El-Sadat succeeded Nasser and in 1973 resumed hostilities against Israel. In 1979, however, he signed the Camp David agreements while the country experienced the economic crisis. Assassinated in 1981, he was replaced by Mubarak who continued the economic development of the country.
