Les marguillers étaient des laïcs chargés de l'administration des revenus de la paroisse: ils réglaient le tarif des bancs à l'église, des inhumations, nommaient les chantres, bedeaux, sonneurs Ils avaient, avec le curé, la garde des clefs et des ornements de l'église Elus parmi les notables de la paroisse, ils jouaient souvent le rôle de magistrats municipaux.
The churchwardens were lay people responsible for administering the parish's revenues: they regulated the price of pews in the church, burials, appointed the cantors, vergers, bell ringers. They had, with the priest, the custody of the keys and ornaments of the church. Elected from among the notables of the parish, they often played the role of municipal magistrates.
