Commentary

En 1876, le Conseil municipal de Roubaix, désireux de donner satisfaction aux vœux de la population de disposer d'un enseignement spécial, adapté aux besoins d'une grande ville industrielle, adopte la création d'un établissement destiné à regrouper sur un point central les écoles académiques (tissage, dessin…) avec leurs collections, le musée artistique et industriel, et la bibliothèque, auparavant disséminés dans la ville.
L'école fut fondée en 1889 sous la dénomination École nationale des arts industriels (ENAI) et construite par l'architecte nordiste Ferdinand Dutert. Elle est inscrite à l'inventaire supplémentaire des monuments historiques.

Charles Louis Ferdinand Dutert, né le 21 octobre 1845 à Douai et décédé le 12 février 1906 dans le 16e arrondissement de Paris, est un architecte français. Revenu en France, après son voyage à Rome, il est actif dans son département d'origine, mais aussi à Paris, particulièrement à l'occasion des expositions universelles de 1889 et de 1900..
In 1876, the Roubaix City Council, wishing to satisfy the population's wishes for special education, adapted to the needs of a large industrial city, adopted the creation of an establishment intended to bring together at a central point the academic schools (weaving, drawing, etc.) with their collections, the artistic and industrial museum, and the library, previously scattered throughout the city.
