Commentary

This potin was almost unknown just over ten years ago. The first examples achieved record prices. From now on it remains rare, especially in very good condition, but its attribution to the Durocasses is confirmed. The name “with cruciform volutes” (initiated in COINS II) or “with a bun” now unambiguously designates this coin!

Historical background

DUROCASSIS (Area of Dreux)

(2nd - 1st century BC)

The Durocasses are not cited by Caesar in the Gallic Wars. They seem to have emancipated themselves from Carnut tutelage quite late, like the Parisii from that of the Senones. Their name means "the warriors of the fortified hill"..
