DUCHY OF BAR - ANONYMOUS
(11th-12th centuries)
Bar-le-Duc was built in 950 by Frédéric I, Duke of Haute-Lorraine, who gave it the name Bar-le-Duc to distinguish this town from Bar-sur-Aube and Bar-sur-Seine. He received the duchy of Otho I the Great (936-973), emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. Bar, whose arms speak for themselves (two back-to-back bars), was first a county before becoming a duchy under Robert de Bar in 1354.
