Historical background

DOMBES - PRINCIPALITY OF DOMBES - FRANÇOIS II DE MONTPENSIER

(1582-1592)

The issuing of coins ceased in the Dombes on the death of Pierre II in 1503. The lordship of the Dombes was given to Louise de Savoie and attached to the kingdom after her death in 1531. In 1560, the king of France, François II, the restores to Louis II de Bourbon-Montpensier, son of Louise de Montpensier, (+1561) sister of Charles the constable of Bourbon, and erects the seigniory of Trévoux into a principality. Minting resumed only under Louis II de Bourbon-Montpensier (1560-1582) to end very late, in the second half of the 17th century. The Bourbon-Montpensiers descend from Robert de Clermont, son of Saint-Louis. The Bourbon-Montpensier family will reign over the Dombes until the year 1693.
