Commentary

The crown domain was everything that the King owned as a landlord. One of the fundamental laws of the kingdom was that the King's domain was imprescriptible and inalienable, but this rule was frequently transgressed, thanks to artifices intended to meet the immediate needs of Finance. Thus, in 1672, Colbert decided to alienate the domains up to 400,000 livres of income to replenish the royal finances.
