Commentary

Rubans de type 1 aux extrémit.és bouletées. La liqueur se déverse de la patère au revers. Pour ce type la marque se trouve complètement à gauche dans le champ ce qui semble plus rare que la forme XX-I de l’émission suivante.
Type 1 ribbons with rounded ends. The liquor pours from the patera on the reverse. For this type the mark is located completely to the left in the field which seems rarer than the XX-I form of the following issue.

Historical background

DIOCLETIAN

(20/11/284-1/05/305)

After abdication

Diocletian compelled his colleague Maximian to abdicate on May 1, 305, Galerius and Constantius becoming augusts and the two former augusts receiving the titles of Beatissimo and Felicissimo. Maximian retired to his estates in Italy. He accepted his retirement badly and returned to service to help his son Maxence, after 306, before falling out with him the following year. Diocletian, as "Senior Augusti", organized the last chance conference to save the Tetrarchy at Carnuntum on November 11, 308. He then retired to Salona (Split) where he died in 313 or 316, possibly assassinated.
