Commentary
Eugène Cavaignac (1802-1857) est un général et homme d'État français. Il fut gouverneur d’Algérie en 1848 puis président du Conseil des ministres chargé du pouvoir exécutif durant l'année 1848. Il fut candidat à l’élection présidentielle de 1848 mais fut battu par Louis Napoléon Bonaparte.
La date du 20 Xbre 1848, soit 20 décembre 1848, correspond à la date où s’arrête les fonctions d’Eugène Cavaignac en tant que Chef de l’État français et Président du Conseil des ministres français.
Jacques Louis Éléonore Godefroy Cavaignac (1800-1845) est le frère aîné d’Eugène Cavaignac. Journaliste républicain, il est un des principaux opposants à la Monarchie de Juillet. Il mourut d’une pleurésie le 3 mai 1845, comme indiqué sur la médaille.
Le monogramme de Combrouse correspond à la marque du graveur “Monsieur Combrouse”. On la retrouve sur quelques médailles de la même période.

He was a candidate in the presidential election of 1848 but was defeated by Louis Napoléon Bonaparte. The date of 20 Xbre 1848, or December 20, 1848, corresponds to the date on which Eugène Cavaignac's functions as Head of the French State and President of the French Council of Ministers ended. Jacques Louis Éléonore Godefroy Cavaignac (1800-1845) was the elder brother of Eugène Cavaignac. A republican journalist, he was one of the main opponents of the July Monarchy. He died of pleurisy on May 3, 1845, as indicated on the medal. The Combrouse monogram corresponds to the engraver's mark “Monsieur Combrouse”. It can be found on several medals from the same period. Louis-Napoleon was elected on December 10, 1848 as the first President of the Second Republic. He did not have the right to run again in 1852. Louis-Napoleon decided to make a coup planned for December 2, 1851, the anniversary of the coronation of the Eagle and the commemoration of the Battle of Austerlitz. The coup is ratified by a plebiscite on December 21 with more than 7.5 million YES and only 640,000 NO. Victor Hugo went into exile on December 12. The following year, he will publish "Napoléon le Petit" which will earn Louis-Napoleon, who has become Napoleon III in the meantime, this famous sentence: "Napoleon le Petit by Victor le Grand".
