Commentary

Nous n’avons pu trouver aucune référence pour ce jeton et avons utilisé l’interprétation que nous avons trouvée sur l’étiquette d’origine, obtenue avec la collection.
Notre lecteur Christophe Montagne nous offre un début d’explication : “Dans la Gazette Numismatique Française de 1897 (F. Mazerolle, Journal de la Monnaie des Médailles, p. 346), j'ai trouvé un passage qui fait vraiment penser au jeton e-auction 32-11416 de la vente actuelle: "18 - Il a été frapé des jetons de jeu à huit pans pour Monseigneur, aiant ses armes d'un côté et au revers une M couronné, entrelassée avec des branches d'olivier. Le millésime 1697est au-dessous".

Bien sur, notre jeton est de 1705 et non de 1697, mais sans doute Louis de France (1661-1711), dit Monseigneur ou Le Grand Dauphin, fit il frapper à plusieurs reprises des jetons à ses armes pour tenir son rang à la table de jeu. Il fut le père de Philippe V d'Espagne et le fondateur de la Maison Bourbon d'Espagne d'où sont issus les actuels souverains espagnols.

Je ne dispose pas des numéros suivants de la Gazette, dans laquelle l'auteur publie la suite de cet important journal; sans doute y trouve-t-on mention de la frappe de 1705.”.
We could not find any reference for this token and used the interpretation we found on the original label, obtained with the collection.
Our reader Christophe Montagne offers us the beginnings of an explanation: “In the French Numismatic Gazette of 1897 (F. Mazerolle, Journal of the coin of Medals, p.. 346), I found a passage that really brings to mind the e-auction token 32-11416 from the current sale: \\\"18 - Eight-sided gaming tokens were struck for Monseigneur, bearing his coat of arms on one side and on the reverse a crowned M, intertwined with olive branches. The 1697 vintage is below\\\".

Of course, our token is from 1705 and not 1697, but no doubt Louis de France (1661-1711), known as Monseigneur or Le Grand Dauphin, had tokens struck with his coat of arms on several occasions to maintain his rank at the gaming table.. He was the father of Philip V of Spain and the founder of the House of Bourbon of Spain from which the current Spanish sovereigns come..

I do not have the following issues of the Gazette, in which the author publishes the continuation of this important journal; no doubt there is mention of the 1705 strike there.. ”
