Commentary
Âgé de soixante ans, Louis XV, ayant perdu son fils Louis en 1765, voulait marier le dauphin, le futur Louis XVI, âgé de seize ans. Il lui fit épouser la fille de l'impératrice Marie-Thérèse et de l'empereur François Ier : Marie-Antoinette, âgée de quinze ans. Marie-Antoinette était également la sœur de l'empereur Joseph II (1765-1790). Le mariage eut lieu le 16 mai 1770 dans la chapelle du château de Versailles. L’opéra, réalisé par Jacques-Ange Gabriel est inauguré à cette occasion.
Sixty-year-old Louis XV, having lost his son Louis in 1765, wanted to marry the Dauphin, the future Louis XVI, aged sixteen. He had him marry the fifteen-year-old daughter of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I: Marie Antoinette. Marie Antoinette was also the sister of Emperor Joseph II (1765-1790). The wedding took place on May 16, 1770, in the chapel of the Palace of Versailles. The opera, directed by Jacques-Ange Gabriel, was inaugurated on this occasion.
