Historical background

DAUPHINÉ - DAUPHINS OF VIENNOIS - CHARLES (FUTURE CHARLES V)

(1349-1364)

When Humbert II, last Dauphin of the Viennese, sold his States to the King, he demanded that the King's eldest son take the title of Dauphin. Charles, son of John II the Good, was the first to wear it. All the eldest sons of the Kings of France had to retain this title until the Revolution. The term "dolphin" is still used today to designate the successor of a person.
