Following the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the city of Danzig was detached from Germany and in 1920 became a free city under the protection of the League of Nations. On September 1, 1939, Germany occupied the territory of the Free City of Danzig and annexed it the following day. In 1945, it was attached to Poland and definitively took the name of Gdansk.
