Historical background

CUBA - REPUBLIC

(1898-1959)

Cuba was discovered in 1492. When Isabella II was overthrown in Spain in 1868, Cuba proclaimed itself independent, but a ten-year war claimed more than 200,000 lives. The authority of Alfonso XII was restored in 1878. Slavery was abolished in 1886. The war of liberation began in 1895 and lasted until 1898. The United States intervened after the destruction of the battleship Maine in the bay of La Havana. The Treaty of Paris of December 10, 1898 consecrates the independence of Cuba. Spain also loses all its colonies: Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines, recovered by the Americans who then begin in colonialism before succeeding later in imperialism.
