Historical background

CRUSADES - DUCHY OF ATHENS - WILLIAM DE LA ROCHE OR MINORITY OF GUI II DE LA ROCHE

(1280-1287-1294)

The first coins of the Duchy of Athens were minted in copper under Guy I de la Roche (1225-1263). The coins of this duchy still pose many dating problems because several dukes had a G (Guillaume, Gui) as their initial letter, a letter which is often isolated on the coins of Thebes. The coins minted under Guillaume de La Roche merge with those minted during the minority of Gui II (1287-1294), notably under the regency of Hélène (1287-1291).
