Zara (current city of Zadar in Croatia) was a Venetian possession on the Adriatic Sea until 1797, when it was occupied by the Austrians. In 1808, Zara was attached to the Illyrian Provinces of French Epirus. In 1813, the French garrison was besieged by Austrian troops for 34 days before surrendering..
