Lucius Cornelius Cinna and Caius Marius were consuls in 86 BC. Marius was consul for the seventh time when he died in January and was succeeded by Lucius Valerius Flaccus. Cinna will also be consul without interruption from 87 to 84 before being assassinated. Sylla takes Athens and, after the battles of Chaeronea and Orchomene, signs the peace of Dardanus with Mithridates VI of Pontus (120-63 BC).
