Commentary

Hybride.
Hybrid. Very light weight. With all its surface silvering. Type 1 ribbons with rounded ends. Appears completely unpublished and unlisted. Missing from all consulted works. Appears to be extremely rare. We are in the presence of a hybrid combining a right reserved for a Caesar, in this case, Crispus with a reverse specific to an Augustus, here Constantine I. Often these coins are classified as imitations. The portrait and the obverse legend leave no doubt, we are dealing with an official issue. This is the first time that we have proposed a hybrid for Crispus for the Ticinum mint

Historical background

CRISPUS

(1/04/317-09/326)

Caesar

Crispus is the son of Constantine and Minervine. Born around 300, he was named Caesar in 317 with Constantine II and Licinius II. Rightly or wrongly, he is accused by his stepmother of wanting to abuse her. Faced with these accusations, Constantine had his eldest son put to death in early 326.
