Exemplaire sur un flan large ovale et irrégulier. Belle tête au droit avec des traces de surfrappe bien perceptibles. Revers de style fin. Patine de collection ancienne

Reverse legend : GORTU/ NIWN.
Reverse translation : (de Gortyne).

Commentary


Trace de surfrappe au droit bien visible sous la tête avec peut-être une trace de légende et du type antérieur du revers. Un seul exemplaire signalé dans l’ouvrage de Svoronos, Numismatique de la Crète ancienne, celui du musée de Vienne.

CRETE - Gortyn

(Second - first century BC)

Gortyn, the second city of Crete, is the center of the fertile plain of Mesara. His coinage began around 450 BC It refers to the abduction of Europa by Zeus transformed into a bull case to escape the jealousy of Hera and conquer the nymph whom he had, among other Minos. After a successful period of economic growth in the fourth and third centuries, the island of Crete fell under the influence of Ptolemy. Economic challenge for two centuries in the Eastern Mediterranean, a victim of piracy, after a long period of political decay, Gortyn was taken by the Romans during the invasion of Crete in 67-66 BC.
