Historical background

CRETE - KYDONIA

(5th - 4th century BC)

Cydonia was located on the northern coast of the island, near Aptera. Its founder, Kydon, was the son of Hermes and Akallis, daughter of Minos. On the obverse, the head could be identified with the nymph Diktynna whose sanctuary was near Cydonia.
