Historical background

COURLAND - DUCHY OF COURLAND - PETER VON BIRON

(1769-1795)

Pierre von BIron grew up at the Russian court in Saint Petersburg, where his father was chamberlain to Empress Anne. He learned Russian, French, German, Latin and Italian, as well as painting, history and music. During his family's exile in Jaroslav, he learned Dutch and Latvian. He succeeded his father as Duke of Courland in 1769. After two failed marriages, he married 18-year-old Dorothéa Von Medem in 1779. He traveled in Europe, bought properties in Prussia, in Bohemia, in case he was driven out of Courland. He abdicated on March 17, 1795, Russia having invaded his states.
