Historical background

COURLAND - DUCHY OF COURLAND - FREDERICK I KETTLER

(1587-1642)

Frederick I Kettler was Duke of Courlande-Sémigalia from 1587 to 1595 and then from 1616 to 1642. He reigned for more than 55 years. Eldest son of Gotthard Kettler and Anne of Mecklenburg-Güstrow, he inherited his duchy upon his death in 1587 at the age of 17½. In 1595, he decided to share it with his brother Guillaume Kettler who obtained Courland, but the latter was deposed in 1616. He therefore reunited the duchy on this date. Married to Elisabeth Madeleine of Pomerania, he had no posterity. His nephew Jacob Kettler, son of Guillaume and regent since 1638, succeeded him..
