Commentary

This coin type, with a lily in the first canton and a ringlet at the beginning of the legend on the reverse, corresponds to the piéfort illustrated in the work of Poey d'Avant (no. 1541, pl. XXIX, no. 9). The denier corresponding to this piéfort had not yet been found. However, we know of several deniers in private collections that have appeared on the numismatic market in recent years. This denier most certainly belongs to the last Angevin feudal issue

Historical background

COUNTY OF ANJOU - CHARLES OF VALOIS

(1290-1319)

Charles de Valois is the third son of Philippe III and was born in 1270. His father gave him the prerogative of the county of Valois and he married, in 1290, Marguerite, daughter of Charles II, count of Anjou and king of Naples; this one brought in dowry the counties of Anjou and Maine. Charles de Valois also received from Philippe le Bel the counties of Alençon and Perche. He died at Nogent-le-Roi in 1325. His son, Philippe, the first king of the Valois dynasty, ascended the throne of France under the name of Philippe VI and, in 1328, united Anjou to the crown..
