Commentary
The University's coat of arms is azure with three golden fleurs-de-lis and a hand rising from a cloud in chief and holding a closed book in gules. The booksellers and printers were united into a single corporation in 1696. They were responsible for overseeing all packages and bales of books. Their jurisdiction extended over Lyon and its provinces, Dauphiné, Bresse, Auvergne, and the Dombes region. The tokens were probably created around 1744 to compensate the trustees and officers of the corporation.
