Historical background

CORPORATIONS - LEATHER CURRIERS

1755

Tanned leathers form two main categories: that of strong leathers and that of work or knitting leathers. The first intended for the manufacture of objects which require a certain rigidity, such, for example, as the soles of shoes; the latter being used, on the contrary, for making shoe uppers, boot uppers and, in general, all works of shoemaking, saddlery, saddlery, etc., which require great flexibility. Hard leathers are used immediately after tanning, while work leathers must be subjected, before being delivered to the trade, to more or less complicated manipulations, having for object to adapt them to the special uses which one wants in TO DO. It is the execution of these manipulations that constitutes the art of the currier.
