Cæcilius Caius Metellus received the consulate in 80 BC with Sylla. He was sent to Spain to fight Sertorius and there was acclaimed imperator (Plutarch, Ser. 22). He had to stay in Spain until 72 BC but was defeated in 79 BC by Sertorius. Pompey was in turn sent to Spain, but Metellus and Pompey were defeated in turn in 76 BC by the troops of Sertorius. In 72 BC, Sertorius was assassinated and pacified Spain.
