La cotisation annuelle au club des Cordeliers était de 24 sols soit le salaire journalier d'un ouvrier spécialisé. Si le recrutement de ce club est typiquement parisien et populaire, la direction du club est entre les mains de riches bourgeois et révolutionnaires tel Georges Danton (1759-1794) qui a fondé le club avec Marat.
