Commentary

Diameter without bail: 55 mm Iron casting, copper rim. The medal was apparently formed from metals from the demolition of the Bastille, and awarded to the bailiffs of the National Assembly. According to Hennin's work, p.67, the medal had a reverse inscribed THE NATION, THE LAW, THE KING. It was made by an engraver named Malgrin, and struck by Ferandine with iron and copper from the debris of the Bastille, in ten proofs. It is dated 1789 on the reverse but the manufacture was done in 1792 and offered on March 11 of that year by MP-F. Palloy to the bailiffs of the National Assembly. Our example is uniface, no mention is made of it in the work

Historical background

FRENCH CONSTITUTION - NATIONAL ASSEMBLY

(20/06/1789-21/09/1792)

On June 17, 1789, the "States General" set themselves up as the "National Assembly". On June 20, the deputies of the Third Estate, as well as 149 representatives of the Clergy and 2 of the nobility, meet in the Salle du Jeu de Paume, in Versailles and swear not to separate until the Constitution is written. This is the famous "Oath of the tennis court". On July 9, this assembly became the "National Constituent Assembly". This assembly, which then had 1,200 deputies, sat first at Versailles and then at the Tuileries. From September 3 to 13, it votes the Constitution, which the King accepts. Its mission accomplished, it separated on September 30, 1791. It was immediately replaced by the Legislative Assembly..
