Obverse description : Paysan, représentant l’ordre du Tiers-Etat, soutient à lui seul la charge du royaume de France, figuré par l’écusson à trois fleurs de lis, surmonté de la couronne royale. Ce paysan a près de lui une bêche et une ruche, et il succombe sous le poids qu’il supporte. A gauche, un guerrier casqué, cuirassé, et l’épée à la main, représentant la noblesse, passe la main derrière l’écusson pour avoir l’air de le soutenir ; une branche de laurier est près de son bras. A droite, un évêque crossé et mitré, représentant le clergé, soutient légèrement l’écusson de la main gauche ; sa crosse est ornée d’une branche de chêne, symbole du civisme.

On June 17, 1789, the "States General" set themselves up as the "National Assembly". On June 20, the deputies of the Third Estate, as well as 149 representatives of the Clergy and 2 of the nobility, meet in the Salle du Jeu de Paume, in Versailles and swear not to separate until the Constitution is written. This is the famous "Oath of the tennis court". On July 9, this assembly became the "National Constituent Assembly". This assembly, which then had 1,200 deputies, sat first at Versailles and then at the Tuileries. From September 3 to 13, it votes the Constitution, which the King accepts.
