Exemplaire sur un flan large et ovale, parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis complets. Magnifique portrait de Constantin Ier. Revers de style fin, de frappe un peu molle. Très belle patine vert foncé. Conserve la plus grande partie de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste lauré casqué et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à gauche, vu de trois quarts en avant avec un lance sur l’épaule droite et tenant un bouclier de la main gauche (E*3).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Augustus”, (Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ S|F //PLN.
Reverse description : Sol nu et radié debout à gauche, le manteau sur l'épaule, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (À notre compagnon Sol invaincu).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Casque orné de volutes. Visière ornée de trois globules posés en triangle. Couvre nuque . Cuirasse cloutée. Bouclier lisse avec umbo central et bordure cloutée. Semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
