Historical background

CONSTANTINE I THE GREAT

(07/25/306-05/22/337)

Filius Augustorum

Constantine I, proclaimed emperor on July 25, 306, preferred to content himself with the title of Caesar until December 25, 307, the date on which he became definitively august. Nevertheless, he was not recognized in the eastern part of the Empire. The Conference of Carnuntum, that of the last chance to save the Tetrarchy took place in November 308 under the rule of Diocletian who, for the occasion, had left his palace in Split. Maximien Hercule abdicated for the second time. Maxentius was declared a public enemy. Licinius, a friend of Galerius was promoted directly august. Maximin II, the oldest Caesar (appointed May 1, 305) and Constantine, already august, were retroceded to the rank of sons of the augusts. This unstable situation was not viable and the tetrarchic system established almost a quarter of a century earlier did not survive it..
