Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle pour ce type monétaire sur un flan parfaitement centré des deux côtés avec les grènetis complets. Buste de Constantin Ier de toute beauté. Revers fantastique.
Très belle patine gris foncé avec des reflets métalliques. Conserve l’intégralité de son brillant de frappe et de son coupant d’origine

Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : “Constantinus Pius Augustus”, (Constantin pieux auguste).

Reverse legend : BEATA TRANQVILLITAS/ VO/TIS/ XX/ C|R// PLG.
Reverse description : Autel inscrit surmonté d'un globe et de trois étoiles ; sur l’autel, un globe divisé en quatre parties, pointé de chaque côté.
Reverse translation : “Beata Tranquillitas/ Votis vicennalibus”, (L’heureuse Tranquillité/ Vœux pour le vingtième année de règne).
Commentary
Poids léger. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges fines sous le paludamentum. Au revers, les lettres C|R dans le champ pourraient être les initiales de “Claritas Reipublicæ” pour l’éclat de la République. Semble complètement inédit et non répertorié avec cette variante de buste et cette légende. Manque à tous les ouvrages consultés. Prendra le n° 99(alpha) dans le supplément III du Bastien.

Augustus
Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
