Commentary

Scyphate. Ce type avec le sceptre cruciforme et le globe crucigère surmonté de la croix patriarcale semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est seulement la deuxième fois que nous le proposons à la vente.
Scyphate. This type with the cruciform scepter and the cruciger globe surmounted by the patriarchal cross seems rarer than general works suggest. This is only the second time we have offered it for sale.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE IX MONOMACHOS

(06/12/1042-01/11/1055)

Constantine IX succeeded Michael V and brought Basil II's daughters Zoe and Theodora back to court. He married the second. Constantinople experienced an artistic renaissance under his reign to the detriment of the Treasury. It was in 1054 that the Great Schism occurred between the Church of Constantinople and that of Rome, at the origin of the birth of the Orthodox who no longer recognize the supremacy of the bishop of Rome. Constantine died in 1055. It was Theodora who succeeded him for only 7 months, the last descendant of the Macedonian dynasty.
