Obverse translation : “Constantinus Iunior Nobilissimus Cæsar”, (Constantin le jeune très noble césar).

Reverse legend : CLARITA-S R-EIPVBLICAE/ A|- RP..
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, la chlamyde sur l’épaule, marchant à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Claritas Reipublicæ”, (L'éclat du bien public).

Commentary


Poids léger. Cette pièce est frappé avant la réforme monétaire de 318. Représentation inhabituelle de Sol au revers courant. la marque à l’exergue est peu claire, mais semble bien pointée et pourrait être inédite.

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
