Commentary

With its superficial silver plating. Type 3 ribbons. Invisible pteryges under the paludamentum. The legend on the obverse is in the dative (dedication). On the obverse, the portrait seems to be adorned with an aegis in front of the neck. On this example, moreover, we seem to see a hand emerging from the flat-lying bust, which would then be a new type of bust completely unprecedented for the workshop. On the reverse, the altar is adorned with a cross.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
