Commentary

Exemplaire tout à fait exceptionnel. Hybride associant un droit réservé aux césars avec un revers destiné à Constantin Ier. Semble complètement inédit et non répertorié. Manque à tous les ouvrages consultés. De la plus grande rareté.
A truly exceptional example. A hybrid combining a right reserved for the Caesars with a reverse intended for Constantine I. It appears to be completely unpublished and unlisted. Missing from all the works consulted. Extremely rare.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
