Commentary

Rubans invisibles. Minuscule portrait inhabituel. Le César tient bien un foudre et non pas la mappa comme décrit dans de nombreux ouvrages. Six rangs verticaux de pierres au revers.
Invisible ribbons. Tiny, unusual portrait. The Caesar is clearly holding a thunderbolt, not the mappa as described in many books. Six vertical rows of stones on the reverse.

Historical background

CONSTANTINE II

(1/03/317-04/340)

Caesar

Born in February 317 according to the most recent chronology, Constantine the Younger receives on coins the title of Caesar like his half-brother Crispus and his cousin Licinius, as well as the title of Prince of Youth. Constantine II is the eldest son of Constantine I and Fausta. In September 337, he received the "pars occidentalis" from the Empire with subjection to his brother Constans, Constantius II having the "pars orientalis". Very quickly, Constantin and Constans fall out. The eldest is eliminated in April 340.
