Obverse description : Buste lauré et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite drapé sur l’épaule, vu de trois quarts en avant (B*01).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ S|F// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Cuirasse et épaulière cloutées. Au revers les lettres dans le champ S|F pourraient être les initiales de “Sæculi Felicitas” pour le siècle de la Félicité.
Type 3 ribbons with pelleted ends. Studded breastplate and shoulder guard. On the reverse the letters in the field S|F could be the initials of “Sæculi Felicitas” for the century of Felicity

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
