Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : "Imperator Caesar Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus" (L'empereur césar Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : SOLI IN-VI--TO COMITI/ -|-// RS.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu, debout à droite, la tête tournée à gauche, le manteau sur l’épaule, flottant au vent, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Magnifique buste finement détaillé. Rubans de type 3 .Ptéryges larges sous le paludamentum. Variante rare de revers où Sol présente le manteau flottant au vent derrière lui.
Magnificent, finely detailed bust. Type 3 ribbons. Wide pteryges under the paludamentum. Rare reverse variant where Sol presents the cloak fluttering in the wind behind him.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
