Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INV-I-CTO COMITI// PARL.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié à demi nu, le manteau sur l’épaule, debout à droite, tournée à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche ; le drapé est flottant.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Poids léger. Avec son argenture. Rubans de type 3 aux extrémités bouletées. Ptéryges larges sous le paludamentum. Émission rare avec le drapé flottant au revers. Type que nous présentons pour la première fois à la vente. Seuls trois exemplaires sont recensés par Philippe Ferrando dont deux en musées.
Lightweight. With its silvering. Type 3 ribbons with pelleted ends. Large pteryga under the paludamentum. Rare issue with the flowing drape on the reverse. Type that we are presenting for the first time for sale. Only three examples are listed by Philippe Ferrando, two of which are in museums.

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
