Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite, vu de trois quarts en avant (A*).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin pieux heureux auguste).

Reverse legend : MARTI CON-SERVATORI/ T|F// PLG.
Reverse description : Mars, casqué, vêtu militairement debout à droite, tenant une haste renversée de la main droite et s’appuyant sur un bouclier de la main gauche.
Reverse translation : “Marti Conservatori”, (À Mars protecteur).

Commentary


Rubans convergents : rubans descendant verticalement le long de la nuque (type 3). Les ptéryges sont visibles. Au revers les lettres dans le champ T|F pourraient être les initiales de “Temporum Felicitas” pour les temps heureux. Nous n’avons pas noté de liaison de coin pertinente. C’est le neuvième exemplaire publié. Prendra le numéro 569d dans le Supplément III du Bastien.
Converging ribbons: ribbons descending vertically along the nape of the neck (type 3). The pteryges are visible. On the reverse, the letters in the T|F field could be the initials of “Temporum Felicitas” for happy times. We have not noted any relevant die bond. This is the ninth example published. Will take the number 569d in Supplement III of Bastien

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
