Exemplaire sur un flan ovale, bien centré des deux côtés. Beau portrait de Constantin Ier. Revers tout à fait énigmatique. Patine vert foncé

Obverse description : Buste lauré, drapé et cuirassé de Constantin Ier auguste à droite, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2).
Obverse translation : “Imperator Constantinus Augustus”, (L’empereur Constantin auguste).

Reverse


Reverse legend : SOLI INVIC-TO COMITI/ S|F// PLG.
Reverse description : Sol (le Soleil) radié, nu le manteau déployé sur les épaules, debout à droite, la tête tourné à gauche, levant la main droite et tenant un globe de la gauche.
Reverse translation : “Soli Invicto Comiti”, (Au compagnon le Soleil invincible).

Commentary


Poids léger. Rubans de type 3. La cuirasse est invisible sous le paludamentum. Au revers les lettres dans le champ S|F pourraient être les initiales de “Sæculi Felicitas” pour le siècle de la Félicité. Avec cette variante de revers, c’est le troisième exemplaire recensé. Prendra le numéro 545b dans le Supplément III du Bastien.
Lightweight. Type 3 ribbons. The breastplate is invisible under the paludamentum. On the reverse, the letters in the S|F field could be the initials of “Sæculi Felicitas” for the century of Felicity. With this reverse variant, this is the third example recorded. Will take the number 545b in Supplement III of Bastian

Augustus

Constantine was born in 274, son of Constance Chlore and Helena. He was named Caesar on the death of his father on July 25, 306 and was proclaimed august on December 25, 307. He married Fausta, the daughter of Maximien Hercule, who gave him five children, three of whom were augusts. The first twenty years of his reign are devoted to imposing himself as the main august against Maximian Hercules, Galerius, Maxentius, Maximin II and Licinius. He is recognized as the first Christian emperor, although baptized only on his deathbed on May 22, 337.
